Parents often worry when their child gets hives, as hives can indicate a serious condition called anaphylaxis. Parents should know however, that hives can also result from less serious causes and usually go away on their own with simple home care. Hand foot and mouth disease is a very contagious, very common viral illness of infancy and childhood that typically resolves on it’s own in just 7-10 days. Common complications include dehydration and secondary skin infections. Less common complications exist for specific strains. Neonates are more at risk for severe disease.
